Tarot and Oracle

Perry Lawson Fine Art is pleased to present Tarot and Oracle: The Art of Divination, a national juried show featuring thirty artists working in a variety of mediums. The exhibition explores symbolism, intuition, and meaning through contemporary reinterpretations of tarot and oracle imagery. Artist and educator Danielle Tegeder served as juror.

Interest in tarot and oracle traditions has grown markedly in recent years, with the imagery appearing not only in decks but on museum and gallery walls, fashion runways, and social media. Tarot began as a parlor game for the royal courts of Renaissance Italy and evolved into a tool for divination and a symbolic language that continues to inspire artists today. Oracle decks, meanwhile, trace their roots to 19th-century spiritualist movements, when mediums and mystics used the cards without relying on tarot's traditional structure. Together, the works on view show how these traditions of divination continue to evolve.

Juror Danielle Tegeder is a New York-based tarot practitioner, artist, and educator. She has been working with the tarot in her own practice in the context of her 25-year-long investigation into the unseen structures that power our world. Dannielle uses tarot in her own life and practice, interweaving legacies of hard-edge abstraction and women’s craft with spiritual wisdom. She is a Professor at Lehman College, CUNY, where she has taught since 2008. She has lectured at Cornell University and SUNY Purchase in addition to visiting appointments at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Rhode Island School of Design, Pratt, Cooper Union, and Princeton University. She is a co-founder of the feminist art collective Hilma’s Ghost.

The exhibition has been organized in consultation with Lisa Levart, creator of the Goddess on Earth book and Oracle Deck.
